Here’s what every diet infomercial asks you:

“Have your tried to lose weight and failed?”

If you say YES like most people do, here is our response — one that you’ll NEVER hear in the ads:

“Congratulations!”

Not doing well the first few attempts may actually be a HELPFUL thing according to some of the latest research in the Journal Of Obesity.

Here at Basics and Beyond fitness & nutrition, the way we like to frame attempts that are…how shall we say…”less than spectacular” is this:

Diet setbacks are really BEHAVIOR LESSONS.

Instead of looking at it as a failure, we look at it as a learning experience.

We look into what happened, and — far more importantly — WHY things happened the way they did.

Every time you try something without success, you have the opportunity to learn something about yourself.

We’ll look at

  1. FACTS: What actually happened (it’s often not as bad as you think!)
  2. UNDERSTANDING: Why things happened the way they did
  3. STRATEGY: What you can do differently in the future; how to set yourself up for success next time

Remember this:

ALL BEHAVIORS SERVE A PURPOSE.

So you dove into the ice cream after a stressful day.

There’s a reason for that. And there are ways to set yourself up to do something different next time!

So cut yourself some slack, and think of your not-great eating days as learning experiences instead of shameful failures.

There’s nothing wrong with you.

You just haven’t gotten the right UNDERSTANDING and STRATEGIES yet.

(That’s where your nutrition coach comes in!)

So speak up if you need help, we’re standing by — just drop us a note and we’ll get back to you right away!
